Mission Statement
Safe Hospitals is a Non-Profit Organization that is committed to reducing maternal and infant mortality rates, and minimizing the risk of infection disease transmission in rural hospitals in Cote d’Ivoire.
We are a federally recognized Non-Profit Organization regulated under the Income Tax Act of Canada # 787310135RR0001
The Need
Hospital mattresses are not adequately covered
This contributes to the proliferation of infectious diseases such as HIV, malaria, tuberculosis, etc.
No ultrasound equipment
No ultrasound equipment is available to determine the position of the fetus before birth. If the fetus is in a transverse or breech position, the risk of death to the mother and baby during delivery is very high. Significant reductions in maternal as well as neonatal and fetal mortality can be achieved if complications are anticipated and addressed promptly.
No bed sheets
Without available clean linens in the hospital, patients are often required to bring bed sheets from their home. This is known to bring additional bacteria into the hospital and ultimately contribute to the spread of infections.
No sterilization infrastructure
Scalpels and other devices are simply soaked with water and bleach. This poses a very high risk of cross-contamination.
No ambulances in working condition
Rural hospitals lack transportation capacity. Delay in reaching a health facility because of a lack of transportation or resources is a barrier for complicated labors to receiving timely and appropriate medical care.
Vision
- To eradicate maternal and infant mortality in rural Cote d’Ivoire;
- Where every child born is welcomed in an infection-free environment.
- A place where no woman should lose her life trying to give life
Help us give Ivory Coast a safe and infection free hospitals!
They too deserve healthy life!
Value Proposition:-
Infection prevention saves lives and resources
Unanticipated infections develop during the course of health care treatment and result in significant patient illnesses and deaths; prolong the duration of hospital stays; and necessitate additional diagnostic and therapeutic interventions, which generate added costs to those already incurred by the patient’s underlying disease. A study by The Institute of Medicine reported that adverse events affect approximately 2 million patients each year in
The United States, resulting in 90,000 deaths and an estimated $4.5–5.7 billion per year in additional costs for patient care.3. The prevention efforts reduced ICU costs by $174,713 per patient for each instance of central line-associated bloodstream infections (CLABSI), and by $163,090 for ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP), In addition to cost-effectiveness, the study found that proper CLABSI prevention efforts resulted in an estimated gain of 15.55 years of life on average for all patients treated in the ICU. Efforts to prevent ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) resulted in an estimated gain of 10.84 years of life. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK2683/
Disease prevention costs less than treatment
One (1) Pressure Steam autoclave sterilizing machine or table top sterilizing machine cost around $1000-$4000. The sterilizing machine can save the lives of up to 20,000 people from HIV infection in 10 year span. Basic maths show that the cost for HIV prevention per year per person is around $0.05-$0.2 ($1000-$4000/20,000).
Based on a study in Cote d’Ivoire, dual therapy was available at around CFAF 100,000 / month (about $230-$250) or $2,700-$3000year/person, which can be reduced by the award of a grant. On the contrary, the triple therapy was about 280,000 FCFA / month ($600-$700) or $7,200-$8,400year/person without possible subsidy of the third drug.
